22124 Firebird Formula 400 - 1972 Sundance Orange
AFX continues to honor the lineage of America’s muscle cars with its HO scale 1972 Firebird Formula 400 in unique Sundance orange and silver honeycomb wheels.
Where the ’67 Firebird was engineered featuring a combination of Camaro parts and influence to meet their production deadline, the moment the first Firebirds went to market, development started on the 2nd generation to ensure this time they were all Pontiac. While it did share the F-body platform with the Camaro, the suspension was recalibrated and the steering box moved to improve handling. The doors were lengthened, eliminating the 3/4 windows of the earlier model, and adding to the cars’ Italian-style aesthetic.
This particular model, also known as the Formula 455, came with the same 455 cubic inch engine available in the Trans Am. By 1972 horsepower for the LS5 455 HO was rated by SAE Net instead of Gross to make the insurance companies believe it was slower. But the car was still a brute. And the engine made big power in a lighter body compared to the Trans Am. So, the performance was impressive!
Still, the Firebird almost met its end in 1972. A United Auto Workers strike affected the only plant manufacturing Firebirds. And the 174 day strike cut production by 50%.
In the end, only 276 Firebird Formula 455s in Sundance Orange came off the line. This made it a very popular car with collectors.
AFX honors this automotive legend with a model that blends historic accuracy and modern slot car technology. Like its full-size counterpart, AFX designed its 1972 Firebird Formula 400 for speed and stability. It sports the AFX Mega G+ chassis, ensuring flawless handling on even the most demanding tracks. The striking bright orange paint and hyper realistic detail work make this a must-have for collectors and racers alike.
Chassis Type: LONG (1.7”) Mega G+ Wheelbase
